Gun Safety Lesson Plans; How to Explain Guns to a Child & Why this is Important in the Home

Are you a gun enthusiast? If so you probably want to share your love of guns with your family. As you introduce your kids to guns you will want to make sure that they are safe at all times. There may be things that you do not even realize you should be teaching your children because they are just second nature to you. Shooting Range Industries is committed to children gun safety. We have put together a list of things that you will want to make sure you teach your children so that you can all stay safe.

Make Sure Child Knows what to Do if They Find a Gun

If you keep guns in your home you will want to make sure that your kids know what to do if they see one around the home. Even if your kids know how to use a gun you will want to make sure that they know how guns should be safely handled and stored in your home. Guns should be stored locked and unloaded. You should keep all ammunition separate from the guns as well. If your child finds a gun that is not stored safely they need to know what to do. They should be taught that they should leave the gun alone and inform an adult.

Teach Children that Real Guns are Not Toys

Your children also need to know what to do if they are at someone’s house and see guns that are not safely stored. You will want to tell your kids that they if they find a gun at their friend’s house that they need to tell an adult. Sometimes when kids get together they make choices that they would not make on their own. Even if your child knows not to play with a loaded gun some of the other kids that they are playing with will not know that. The safest option is to have an adult come and get the gun. Children as young as three years old are strong enough to pull the trigger on a handgun so teach them to be safe!

Safe Gun Storage

If you have anyone in your home that suffers from depression and anxiety you will want to be extremely cautious. Studies show that the risk of dying by suicide is 4 to 10 times higher in homes with guns. Clearly this is not anything that you want to see happen to anyone in your family. Even if you have your guns carefully stored and your ammunition locked up in a separate area you may think that you are safe. Unfortunately many times older children know where the keys are to the guns. Change up where you hide your keys for your guns and ammunition to help avoid a suicide attempt.
