Is a Reflex Sight Good for Hunting? How Far Can You Shoot with a Red Dot Sight & More

Reflex sights are a fast target acquisition, and mounting options make these a great little enhancement to multiple shooting platforms is one of the most practical aiming solutions available. Reflex sights are big on performance and can mount on virtually any type of gun, including shotguns, handguns, ARs, and more which are commonly referred to as a micro red dot. Where the shooter looks through a piece of partially reflecting glass is how the reflex sight works. Rightfully calling it the micro-red dot, the most common reflex sights use a simple red dot. Today, we at Shooting Range Industries would like to discuss reflex sights further.

What is an MOA (Minute of Angle) in Shooting?

Minute of angle or MOA is measured by the dot of a scope. One MOA is just slightly over a 1 inch at 100 yards. Covered by three MOA dots is a 3-inch circle at 100 yards. To completely cover an 8-inch pie plate a 100 yards eight MOA would do it. The smaller the MOA the finer the aiming, the more precise a shooter. Going smaller may not necessarily be the best option particularly if your eyesight is poor.

Is a Red Dot Sight Good for Hunting?

For hunting, a micro red dot sight is useful. In the event you like shooting things that rarely sit still at relatively close range, a reflex sight is right up your alley with 150 yards or closer for instance, especially comes to mind with a predator hunter. Coyotes are usually always on the move when they are coming to the call. Most shots happen fast, making a fast target acquisition. A reflex sight is quick and precise. To growing popularity of ARs for hunting, reflex sights are very complimentary. The main reason why people can shoot a handgun much more accurately is because you don’t have to line up a front and rear sight. People with fading eyesight no longer have to worry about seeing blurry fixed sights on their weapon. The reflex sight can bring the excitement back for those people who were disappointed in their shooting due to eye problems. A wide field of view reflex sight can work wonders for people who have a hard time wing-shooting with a shotgun. Even shotgunners who have poor form can still shoot fairly well because of the forgiveness that the reflex sight provides. People who have a tendency to lift their head from the stock can still break clays and make kills as long as they can still see the dot. These little sights can add much-needed yardage to your effective range from mounted reflex sights on their favorite hand cannon, the handgun hunter. These sights can make you much more accurate. As it is a compact gun that doesn’t usually bode well for long-range accuracy due to its short sight plane, a popular favorite hunting gun is a Glock 29. You won’t have to over think shooting a deer out to 90 yards with the reflex sight and solid rest, however. At best, hit a target at half the distance without the sight. Most avid shooters can double their range with this effective unit.
