A recent news article highlights Hermosa Beach Police Department’s new mobile, indoor firing range and training center built by Shooting Range Industries.
In the wake of mass shootings nationwide and widespread public concern about lethal use of force by police, the city of Hermosa Beach has opened a new $380,000 facility to give officers the latest tools in situational training.
The facility’s combined shooting range and interactive video simulator will allow the agency’s roughly three dozen officers to regularly practice firing their guns and using less-than-deadly weapons, including stun guns, batons and pepper spray.
Hermosa Beach Police Chief Sharon Papa said series of highly publicized mass shootings in small towns shows the city’s vulnerability, despite its relatively low crime rate.
“We’re in a risky business and use-of-force almost always results in a claim against the city or a lawsuit,” Papa said. “The first thing that always gets asked is: ‘When was that officer last trained? What did the training consist of?’
“While I hope no major incident happens in our city, I think Littleton, Colorado, thought that. I think Sandy Hook thought the same thing. And no one thought the horrible incident in the movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, would happen either.”
