For years, 35 to be exact, the Beretta M9 has been the standard issue, and now that is all about to change. Its replacement is a modular handgun designed by Sig Sauer. The gun has been available for civilian use since 2014 and now the U.S. Army has announced that the P320 will replace the current service pistol used since the mid 1980s. Shooting Range Industries is here to talk all about this gun and what this means for the U.S. Army.
New Army Pistol & Modular Handgun System Winner
Over the past two years the Army has held a “Modular Handgun System” competition that had many gun manufacturers competing for the contract. The Army wanted to see what different gun manufacturers could bring to the table rather than designing a sidearm on their own from scratch. It was a long process and some were questioning how much longer it could possibly take. The contract is worth upwards of $580 million. Other competitors for the contract included Glock, Smith & Wesson, FN America and Beretta.
Sig Sauer P320 is Available in Different Sizes
The P320 is available in three different sizes: 9mm, .357SIG, and .40S&W calibers. The reason for this being the need for different sizes and calibers for different purposes. Soldiers need a gun that is easy to use and durable. If you were looking for a gun that is meant for investigative work, you are looking for one that is far more compact and easily concealed. Sig Sauer presented the 9mm in the competition and that is the gun the Army has decided is the right fit for them.
The Army’s Need for a Modular Handgun
The great thing about the P320 is its customization abilities. It is able to accept many accessories such as lasers and silencers. There are also many different grip accommodations that can be made so that it is a good fit in hands of all sizes. Not only does the size of hand differ between men, but more and more women are joining the army, and this gun can accommodate their smaller hands. The ability to customize this handgun is important for the Army so they can meet the specific needs of a variety of missions. Beretta tried to make upgrades with their M9A3 but it was still not a completely modular handgun.
